Managing Your New Joomla! 1.5 Website - Part One: The Basics
Saturday, 11 December 2010 01:15
Those unfamiliar with the Joomla! Content Management System (CMS) may find the following guide helpful. The guide covers some basic tasks like editing content in articles, creating new articles and managing user accounts. More topics will be added in the near future. Lastly, it should be noted the this guide covers only the most basic configuration of the content management system, more advanced configurations may require alternate methods for site control.
Logging Into the Administrator Area
To access the administrator area of your Joomla! site go to your websites homepage, then simply add the text "/administrator" to the end of the address. For example: if your domain is example.com, the address to access the administrator area should be "example.com/administrator". (It should be noted that in some configurations, mostly for extra security, the address is different and you will not be able to access the administrator area without this information.)
After you have successfully logged in, you will be greeted with the Administrator Control Panel. The Control Panel is merely a welcome page with shortcuts to frequently accessed pages of the administrator area. Each of the shortcuts on this page is also accessible throughout the administrator area via the horizontal menu that appears in the top-left of the page.
Managing Users and User Types
One of the first tasks you are likely to encounter is managing user accounts. To manage user accounts, hover the mouse over the "Site" menu item, and select "User Manager". The user manager will display a list of all users who are registered to use your Joomla! website. This includes users who have special permissions to the front-end or public area, as well as those with permissions to access the administrator area.
To edit and existing users profile, simply click on their user name as it appears in the User Manager. This takes you to the User Edit page, where you can change the username, password and the group the users is assigned to among other things.
